~ History of Gilbert

Gilbert owes its beginning to the Arizona Eastern Railway. They wanted to build a railway between Florence and Phoenix. At that time, Gilbert real estate was just a parcel of land owned by William Gilbert (thus, the name). Gilbert was primarily farmland. In 1911, there was a boom in the city thanks to the Consolidated and Eastern Canals and the Roosevelt Dam construction. It was known as the "Hay Capital of the World" until the late 1920s.

Since the 1970s, the population has exploded from 1,971 to 178,539. The once agriculturally dependent town became more of a suburb of Phoenix. Gilbert continues to diversify its economy to keep up with its phenomenal growth.
